I was waiting in the lobby at Gerow Hair Ink to interview co-founder Jonathan Gerow about a treatment called Scalp Micropigmentation – known to get rid of the appearance of baldness. The phone was ringing off the hook, the lobby had three men waiting, and someone came from the back looking very happy about something as he thanked Jonathan and shook his hand vigorously. I assumed that the guy leaving had just had the treatment done, and if so, it looked great – like the way Vin Diesel’s head looks. The receptionist pointed me out to Jonathan, and he came over to introduced himself. He did tell me that the very happy man had had his last treatment of the procedure known as Scalp Micropigmentation. Jonathan brought me to the backroom where the procedure takes place. Erik, Jonathan’s partner, and another practitioner were busy working with two guys whose heads were cradled in the cushiony part of a sitting massage chair. The two practitioners had a needle in a tube that was hooked up to a machine with lit numbers in small square boxes. They carefully dotted the men’s heads with the needle – giving the appearance of hair stubble. Before I left the room, Jonathan had the two guys lift their heads from their head-rests. I was surprised how much it really looked like hair stubble. I then sat down with Jonathan to talk about Scalp Micropigmentation.
Cool America Magazine: Those guys really looked great.
Jonathan Gerow: Thanks, man. I’m glad you thought so. I really love what we do here. It changes lives!
CAM: Explain Scalp Micropigmentation?
JG: Scalp Micropigmentation is an innovative solution that replicates the appearance of thicker, fuller hair. Specially trained Gerow Hair Ink practitioners apply a proprietary formula of pigment (ink) to the scalp with micro-fine needles to create thousands of tiny impressions, giving the illusion of hair, similar to the artist’s technique of (pointillism) stippling. This affordable solution can also be used to enhance an existing hair restoration or provide an alternative to individuals who want a non-medical, non-surgical treatment suitable for all types of hair loss.
CAM: How does it differ to other hair restoration systems on the market?
JG: The main factor that’s going to help determine which hair loss method is right for you is whether you want to have hair you can style or not. If you want thick, full hair then a hair transplant could be the best option, provided you have a good donor site. However, if you’ve gone completely or almost bald, a transplant is unlikely to work as you won’t have a suitable donor site to take the hair from. If you’d prefer a style you don’t need to maintain and just wake up and go, Scalp Micropigmentation could be the answer provided you choose a skilled practitioner. It leaves behind a fully shaved appearance that you hardly ever need to maintain.
CAM: Why do you think people should consider scalp micropigmentation before Hair Club for Men or hair transplants?
JG: Hair transplants are excellent if you have a viable donor site. However, they aren’t 100% guaranteed to work. SMP on the other hand, is almost 100% effective at covering up hair loss as long as it is done correctly at a good clinic. With Scalp Micropigmentation you aren’t actually getting your hair back. It’s more of an illusion and completely undetectable, whereas a hair transplant will give you a scar and sometimes 50% of the hair that is implanted may not grow. Hair transplants are expensive and take a year or more to actually see results. With Scalp Micropigmentation you have instant results and very little down time.
CAM: Why should people come here? Why can’t they go to a tattoo parlor and have it done?
JG: The difference between a tattoo and SMP is everything. The ink pigment is organic and natural and does not change colors over time. The depth of the penetration is a lot less than tattooing. Scalp Micropigmentation is applied in the upper dermal and tattoos are three times deeper. The process of SMP is completely different and takes a skilled eye to create the proper results that we provide for all our customers.
CAM: Is this process for men and woman?
JG: Yes. Lately women have been interested in filling in lost density and strengthening their hairline.
CAM: Is this process for men that have any hair color? Will someone with blond or red hair look just as good as someone with dark hair?
JG: We have treated all hair colors and skin tones.
CAM: So, I decide I want to have scalp micropigmentation done, what’s the process that I’m about to embark on?
JG: You will start with a consultation to determine what type of hairline will look best. Once we figure that out we map out the entire scalp where the procedure is needed — now you’re ready for your first session which we call your base session. A week later you come back for the second session, and then a third session to make sure everything is perfect.
CAM: What does the procedure cost?
JG: It varies from $1800 to $5000, depending how much work in required
And finally, I know that your reputation is excellent but what if someone is not happy with the results?
JG: If a client is not totally satisfied with this treatment there are options such as laser removal. It only takes 1 to 2 sessions to remove the ink completely. However, in the eight years of doing this I have never had an unsatisfied client. I’ve seen men’s lives change and their confidence restored – it’s truly been a game-changer for all our customers.
